Naseby

Considered by many Otago lads and lad-ettes as a Mecca of MTB XC riding. With the summer climate being hot, to very hot and with free draining soils there are few problems with the tracks being too muddy to ride. The Naseby Forest also aids in sheltering the tracks from the odd southerly shower. The forest is an ideal location for close, exciting and challenging riding and racing, while the setting has a laid back atmosphere.

Class: Recreational to Intermediate to Expert

Travel time by Car from Dunedin: 1 3/4 hours

Grade: Undulating single track through established forest, contour water races, 4WD tracks

How to get there: Head north from Dunedin to Palmerston on SH1. Turn onto SH85 (Pig Route), travel on your way to Ranfurly. Just past the Kyeburn turn off you will see a blue sign saying NASEBY – ignore it and keep going towards Ranfurly (this road will get you there, but heres the short cut), turn off SH85 onto Channel Road. Head into town looking for the “Camping Ground” AA sign, and head up to the Swimming Dam and park your car here or if your lost, head along to Kila's bike shop in the main street (near the old post office) for maps and info.

Elevational Range: ~100m - Elevation (600m above worry level)

Under the wheel: clay, gravel, roots, dam good fun

When to ride: Any time you can find a day out, contact the club as it is best if you tag along with others who know the area the first couple of times so you get a guide around the fun tracks

When not to ride: When your in a body cast or your bikes been stolen. In winter or very wet times the tracks on open areas may be a bit gluggy and most of the open single track is clay based so be prepared for a dirty bike. In mid-summer there can be a fire ban in the forest, hence they close the area to all recreational users. If in doubt call ERNSLAW ONE LIMITED, Derwent St, Naseby, Ph (03) 444 9995 to be sure your trip will not be an unhappy one

Description: Naseby Forest has everything a XC rider could hope for, excellent single track (up, down and all around), open fast fire roads, creeks and gullie tracks and many a friendly tree to remind you to concentrate on your riding while bouncing along the picturesque forest paths. The track criss-crosses an old gold miners race, a unique bit of Naseby History for you to enjoy on route. Try the “Bowl” at the head of the Hog Burn Gully – it’s a dug out hill side that has a way of spitting you out at speed into the air. Great fun.
